how may we create an engaging, educational, and worry-free adventure with nature

once covid-19 restrictions started lifting, travel to natural spaces increased dramatically. families with children were an especially big part of this trend. since children typically have short attention spans, they need more stimulus to keep them engaged. basco is an adventure pack that equips a child with all the tools and manuals they need to learn about rocks and minerals.

i started the refining process by giving more shape and definition to some of the interesting forms in earlier sketches. i was exploring all possibilities, including a possible adventure buddy to distract them. i decided against anything that the parent would have to carry eventually until i thought of the idea of making it a backpack.

a backpack could carry everything needed for an adventure and it can even carry a water bottle or some snacks, but it was important to me that the backpack wasn’t too big or the supplies too heavy for a child to carry.

i chose the most interesting shape, this hunched-over character that i thought had so much personality and so much potential for an adventure backpack. i started thinking about things that needed to be included to successfully explore rocks and minerals.

some challenges i faced during this process was figuring out how to design details in soft goods and how to model it properly.

the first attempt at 3d modeling did not go as planned. the model ended up too blocky and solid. additionally, this 3d model did not allow me to add as many details as i wanted to include and because of the short timeline, i have to make a decision on how to show my concept. i decided to do some digital sketches and focus on getting the form and detilas right and for the next attempt, frankensteining different parts of other backpacks and merging them in photoshop.

the final digital result for basco is an adventure pack with a transparent pocket in the front to store a field notes book and a pen. basco also has an arm for rock storage that detaches for easy cleaning.

what’s next?

  1. create pattern for basco

  2. buy cordura fabric and canvas

  3. bring basco to life!
